SocietyMassCom: Intro to Communication: Key Terms (W3-P1) Fa17

Communication vs. Communications

Communication: “a process by which information is exchanged between individuals through a common system of symbols, signs, or behavior” (Merriam-Webster).

Communications: _________

Communications: (a) “a system (as of telephones, or computers) for transmitting or exchanging information.“  (b) “the technology of the transmission of information (as by print or telecommunication)” (Merriam-Webster).

To see the difference, boil each definition down to one word. If you were forced to choose one word, what would it be?

Interpersonal communication vs. mass communication

Interpersonal communication: “Communication between two or more individuals, usually in a small group, although it can involve communication between a live speaker and an audience” (Pavlik & McIntosh, p. 23).
Mass communication: “Communication to a large group or groups of people that remains
largely unknown to the sender of the message” (Pavlik & McIntosh, p. 23).

Some related terms

Broadcast (verb): (a) “to scatter or sow (seed or something similar) over a broad area.” (b) “ to transmit or make public by means of radio or television” (Merriam-Webster).

Mass medium (noun): “a medium of communication (such as newspapers, radio, or television) that is designed to reach the mass of the people —usually used in plural” (Merriam-Webster).  Plural form is mass media.
